Emz Finch

Painting

Emz has always been hugely inspired by the natural world, growing up on a farm in Wiltshire. At school, Emz was pushing the boundaries of what was possible in terms of scale and ambition for her art projects, making sculpture and installations which were deeply conceptual. At the age of 18, Emz became disabled overnight and was left in a wheelchair. The difficult decision was taken to abandon her dreams to go to art college, so she obtained a degree, had a successful career in the city and in TV for 12 years before returning to her painting in 2017 after her first daughter was born.  She has taken a foundation with the London Fine Art Studios and obtained a scholarship to the Creative Visionary Programme in 2019. Emz started painting a series of landscapes of London scenes which celebrated the green spaces all around her during her many years commuting into town. During lockdown, she was commissioned by many people to create gifts of landscapes that could not be visited – she helped people celebrate love, commemorate deaths and remember family time that was much missed. Since March 2021 Emz has been growing her forest of trees.  Following some traumatic miscarriages during lockdown, Emz turned to nature and trees to help her mind heal and now she uses her painting process as a form of meditation to paint her emotions.  She welcomed her second daughter, Nell, in 2022 and has been painting trees and landscapes, as well as taking commissions since then.  For her birthday in 2023 she was given a plein air painting kit, so she now can be found painting all the London landscapes she dreams of capturing en plein air!
