Ceramic, Drawing and Marbling

My drawing practice derives from an acute awareness of being a participant in the environment and its development over time. Global ecological concerns currently present unfathomable issues seemingly beyond individual control. The long-term privileging of social, political and economic forces arguably results in mis-managing the land and the processes that sustain it. My interpretations of the extended field of drawing and participatory art practices provide me with useful tools with which to explore the current decline in insect populations. On occasion my three-dimensional Drawings create a spatial immersion that is all-encompassing. For example, when the drawn lines join with climbing ropes, breaking free from the page to take flight and reach between the walls. Such artistic outputs stand as opportunities for sensorial re-connection to the natural phenomena that we have problematically been taking for granted. The serendipity of nature is reflected in the unpredictable and imprecise lines of monoprints and etchings. Curiosity and the desire to understand my surroundings drives meticulous graphite, charcoal and chalk mark-making. I share this investigative process through collaborative drawing activities. Encouraging the audience to participate in making artworks in response to the environment, I hope to access a place of mutual understanding and interest. With this is mind, my ongoing practice-based research will continue to explore relations between people and the natural world.
